Edwin Diaz announces new contract with Mets

Mets and Edwin Diaz are Finalizing $102 Million Contract

The Mets have reached a new contract with left-hander Edwin Diaz, who has agreed to a seven-year, $102 million deal. He is the highest-paid player in the Mets’ recent history.

Diaz threw an impromptu news conference today at the Mets’ spring training facility announcing the new contract. He will turn 37 in December. The contract is for more money than any of his eight big league starts has been worth.

However, he will be able to opt out of the final five years of his contract after the 2017 season, so he will have an extra year of control over his pay.
