India halts production of cough syrups suspected of links to child deaths, disease
Kathmandu, March 7 (IANS) The National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFC) has halted its production of anti allergy cough syrups that are suspected of links to child deaths and diseases after a series of irregularities were noticed in the production process, officials said Monday.
“The NHFC is investigating the production of anti allergy cough syrups that had been produced by a private company that worked with an agency of Nepal’s National Drug Regulatory Authority (NDA) to manufacture and export them.
“The cough syrups were suspected to be linked to deaths and diseases that have been reported by people,” said Manoj Paudel, president of the NHFC.
The cough syrups, which contain menthol and camphor, were manufactured and manufactured and exported by a private company.
The NHFC, however, has not detected any harmful side effects in the cough syrups so far, Paudel said.
